CubaDisco 2007
May 19-17
Venue: Pabellon Cuba, Havana
Cubadisco 2007 was dedicated to music and the cinema, with Venezuela as its guest of honor. Last year’s best CDs received awards at the opening ceremony at Karl Marx Theater on May 19. An International Symposium organized by the Institute of Cuban Music and the Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music was held at the Habana Libre Hotel, May 21 – 25. It featured discussions on the topics of Music and Cinema, Cuban Musicology and the Music Industry, and Folk Music in Latin America. Performances by international music groups and artists, as well as Cuban performers, could be seen throughout Havana at Pabellon Cuba, Amadeo Roldan theater, the Garden of the Institute of Music, ExpoCuba, Salon Rosado de la Tropical and more! Cubadisco 2008 will be devoted to Africa and its Diaspora with the theme being Music and Poetry.

21st International “Boleros de Oro” Festival
June 19-24
Venue: Various Theaters in Havana
The International “Boleros de Oro” Festival is the oldest and most prestigious boleros event in the western hemisphere.

“Cucalambeana - Décima” Festival
June 25-July 1
Venue: El Cornito, Las Tunas
A festival focusing on the “Décima,” ten-line stanzas and improvisational verses, within rural Cuban culture.

27th Caribbean Festival: Santiago de Cuba’s “Fiesta del Fuego”
July 3-9
Venue: Santiago de Cuba
This event reflects the history and culture of the Caribbean islands and will include a wide variety of concerts and artistic performances in the Cuban folkloric traditions of the eastern part of the island.

“Caiman Rock”
July 18-22
Venue: Various Theaters in Havana
A rock music festival that includes concerts, and CD and magazine launchings.

Hip Hop Festival
July 27-30
Venue: Various in Havana
Features performances of various Cuban and foreign Hip Hop groups.

“Benny Moré” International Festival of Popular Music
September 21-24
Venue: Santa Isabel de las Lajas and Cienfuegos
An event held to pay homage to Benny Moré, the most relevant Cuban popular singer of all time. This festival features famous bands and singers of popular dance music.

22nd International Contemporary Music Festival
October 1-10
Venue: Theater Auditorium Amadeo Roldán, Havana
This event brings together contemporary Cuban and foreign bands, composers, conductors, and soloists.

Jazz Competition for Young Musicians
October 31 - November 3
Venue: Various in Havana
An opportunity to see new talent among the many young Cuban Jazz musicians preparing to follow in the footsteps of the great Jazz stars.

International Choir Festival
November 20-27
Venue: Sala Dolores, Santiago de Cuba
This Choir Festival allows for exchange between prestigious Cuban and foreign choirs.

International Jazz Plaza Festival
November 29-December 2
Venue: Theater Auditorium Amadeo Roldán, Hotel Nacional, Various in Havana
Jazz stars from all over the globe flock to Havana to perform in this festival organized by renowned pianist Chucho Valdés. Concerts, recitals, jam sessions and lectures.

Dance

“Cuballet”
July 10-August 6
Venue: Centro Prodanza and various theatres in Havana

A workshop focusing on the methodology and dance techniques of the Cuban School of Ballet for ballet students over 10 years of age as well as professionals.

Cinema

International Workshop on the Organization of Cinematographic Production
October 15-November 26
Venue: Cine Chaplin, Havana
This workshop is for students interested in learning about cinematographic production as well as for those already working in these areas yet without formal education. New Latin American Cinema Festival

Cuban Film Festival
December 4-14
Venue: Havana and other cities
This prestigious festival offers a wide range of this year’s Cuban and Latin American films. The event includes a contest of scripts and posters as well as various seminars, including one about Latino cinema made in the USA.

Literature

International “Ernest Hemingway” Colloquium
June 21-24
Venue: Ernest Hemingway Museum, Havana
Debates will focus on Hemingway’s links to bullfighting as well as on his knowledge of Cuba - present in his collections at “Finca La Vigía” and other institutions.

9th International Symposium of Literary Translation
November 27-29
Venue: Villenas Hall, UNEAC (The National Union of Writers and Artists)
This event will bring together both local and international translators and students. Debates will center on lectures, projects, and exchanges related to literary translation.
