In June 2016, PlazaCUBA launched its first annual Sponsored Musician Program, and selected 22-year-old Berkeley born bassist Nathan Pedley of Fantastic Negrito to travel and study at the National School of Music in Havana. PlazaCUBA is now accepting applications through January 31, 2017, for its Sponsored Musician Program, and the winner will be announced on February 28, 2017.

“The idea to offer an annual sponsorship for one young American musician to attend PlazaCUBA’s Cuban music workshop at the National School of Music in Havana has been brewing for some time,” says Founder / Director Alisa Froman. “We want to not only expose young musicians to the high level of musicianship in Cuba and to the various musical genres, but also focus on musicians who will have the most benefit from the music instruction, especially those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.”

From Berkeley to Havana via PlazaCUBA: 22-year-old bassist Nathan Pedley, Recipient of the Sponsored Musician Program 2016, shares his experience

“Day 2 in Havana: First day of class at La ENA. The three of us were in a room with the teacher Ruben. First thing I noticed was that that dude could play! We started learning how to play Son. Ruben taught us a base line which was pretty much just 1, 4, 5 like blues. I picked up the rhythm quick but then he started showing us some variations and it threw me for a loop but I got it eventually. … “Day 4: A couple of hours after we got back from the school, the group met up in the conference room at the hotel for a demonstration by Pupy and his band. It was dope especially since we just saw his full band put on a full show the night before. This was one of the highlights for me because Pupy made some interesting points about the history of how salsa was created and composed and how nowadays pretty much everything has been done already or has been written but now it’s our job as artists to learn from the chronicles of the music, know it, and then put our own voice in it.” — Nathan Pedley
